Dear Introverts (and Extroverts)

 

I’m writing this in the hope that I can let people know that everyone experiences self-doubt, introverted or extroverted.

I’ve seen a lot of people write about how being an introvert can make interacting with new people a pretty tricky situation. The biggest worry or frustration seems to be not being chatty enough, or not being able to show their true self.

I’m so glad that the blogging community, in particular, is a place for likeminded people to discuss situations like this, along with solutions and coping mechanisms. The fact that blogs are our own precious little spaces on the internet where we can share anything and everything on our mind is so special, and such a wonderful thing. I imagine this is especially brilliant for people who would class themselves as introverts.

But for those of you who are extroverts, like myself, I wanted to talk about what it’s like on the other side of the scale. I haven’t found anyone writing about it, so I’m just going to throw this one out there myself!

I’ve always been a very sociable person. I adore meeting new people; I find it fascinating to speak with strangers about their lifestyle and life experiences; I just love a good ol’ chinwag, really. I also love to make people laugh. When I get the opportunity to perform, comedy is easily my favourite style.

Extroverts might be at the opposite end of the scale to introverts, but that certainly doesn’t mean we don’t have insecurities about interacting with new people or saying the wrong thing.

In simple terms, I guess the anxiety for introverts is the inability to be yourself at all times, and therefore lack of opportunity to show how freakin’ awesome you are. On the other hand, the anxiety for extroverts is the fact that by being open with everyone about who you are, you become extremely vulnerable.

I was prompted to write this post when I heard RuPaul say something that really stuck with me, and is something I wish I could tell my younger self when worrying that I’d irritated other people or scared them away by asking what they’ve been up to recently.

So to all the extroverts out there: Next time you think you’ve laughed too loudly in a public place, you’ve been too silly in front of someone new, you’ve talked too much about a book you’re loving at the moment or you’re excited about something you’ve achieved career-wise, I want you to tell yourself my new favourite quotation by the ultimate queen herself:

 

You are never too much. You are everything.

    I really liked this post! Sometimes i fall between the two, like i prefer to keep to myself and dislike being too out there…but i dont want the world to know how shy i am. So in the past I’ve acted bigger and louder, it made me so uncomfortable, but I didn’t want anyone thinking I was. Then for days after I’d think, did I laugh weird? Was I too loud? Omg someone asked me a question and i didnt answer them im terrible. So then I’d go back to not speaking for a while…it’s weird how the mind works.

    The quote by RuPaul is so relatable, I love it!
